Pre Season Success For Juniors

A selection of our teams attended the Euxton Girls FC Pre Season Tournament over the August Bank Holiday Weekend and were very successful.

Our Under 10s in their first ever games together reached their final only to lose on penalties to Hesketh Colts after the score was deadlocked 1 – 1 after extra time. The Under 10s played extremely well under the leadership of Captain Lauren Tunstall and can take heart from the fact that they were the only unbeaten team in their age group during normal tournament play.

Our Under 11s were successful in winning their age group against a strong Wigan Athletic Team in the final 2 – 1, with a last gasp winner from debutant Emily Hughes. The team started the tournament slowly with three goalless draws but momentum soon gathered and before long Stuart Tomlinson’s team were firing on all cylinders. Stuart welcomed new players Rebekah Barker, Emily Hughes, Kalantha Hirst and Cailey McCabe to his squad for the tournament and new season.

Our under 12’s team arrived at the Euxton pre-season tournament never having previously played the 9 a side format of the game together as a team, but showed no signs that adapting to a new formation and style of play would be a problem.

With the squad on the day also including 3 debutants making their first appearances for the club, Lauren Holderness, Charlotte Chalder and Nicole Bilsborough, it was hoped that the team could take their excellent pre-season training efforts and attitudes into the days fixtures.

After playing 5 games the team progressed into the next round as winners of the group, having only lost one game and winning four, conceding just 1 goal in the process. After beating Town Green 2-0 in the semi-final, the final pitted the side against a strong Blackburn side who won last year’s league title.

After a tightly contested match with both teams playing strong attacking football but defending equally as well, the only clear cut chance of the match fell to Michaela Halsey who calmly slotted the ball home with a well struck half volley to seal a 1-0 win in the dying seconds.

The win capped an excellent team performance both in the final and across the day itself with strong individual performances from every player in the team, who can now hopefully use this win to kick start their coming season and challenge for further trophies as the season progresses.
